Choosing a Pair of Combo Skis

What are combo skis? The simple explanation is that you are buying a traditional pair of two skis for learning. The first thing to assess while looking for a pair of skis is the size of the rider. This will determine what size skis you should buy. This is determined by the weight of the rider. The most common sizes are 59 inches rated for riders up to 120 lbs, 63 inches rated for riders 110-160 lbs, and the 67 inch skis rated for riders over 140 lbs. Many people want to purchase a pair of skis that their whole family can use. In this case, it is going to be best to get the larger 67 inch skis. This is because it is easier for a smaller rider to ride larger skis than it is going to be for a larger rider to ride smaller skis. If you are looking to teach a very small rider less than 60lbs there are children’s sized skis that are generally 46 inches.

On each ski there will be a traditional ski binding, one of the skis should include a rear toe plate for the opportunity to use your skis as a slalom if that is something you are interested in. There are two major types of bindings mounted on combo skis. The first being the very traditional horseshoe binding as you see on the HO Blast Combo skis. These are great because they adjust to several foot sizes very easily. The next type of bindings you see on combos are lace up bindings that are more similar to what you would see on a traditional slalom ski, like on the HO Burner Combos. If you plan to start working on slalom skiing these are the higher end binding that will be more supportive while you are carving back and forth.
